Up and Running with HCM 9.2 on PT 8.54 via PUM "Demo Image"

Yes, you read that correctly. PUM is the new demo image. According to MOS Doc ID 1464619.1 "As of HCM 9.2.006, the PeopleSoft Image and PeopleSoft Demo Image have been combined into one PeopleSoft Update Image. You can use the PeopleSoft Update Image for both your patching and demonstration purposes." If you are current on your PUM images, you probably already knew that. If you are like me, however, and haven't downloaded a demo image for a while, then you may have been looking for demo images on the old MOS demo image page.

Since I use the image for prototyping and demonstrations, I turned off SES and reduced the memory requirements to 2048 MB. It is working great at this lower memory setting.

There are a lot of new and great features in the PT 8.54 PUM:

  • Attribute based branding,
  • Component Branding (add your own CSS and JavaScript to components without hacking a delivered HTML definition)
  • REST Query Access Service,
  • Mobile Application Platform (MAP), and
  • Fluid homepages

Tip: Access the fluid homepages by visiting the URL http://<yourserver>:8000/psc/ps/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/NUI_FRAMEWORK.PT_LANDINGPAGE.GBL. For example, if you have a hosts entry mapping your PUM image to the hostname hcmdb.example.com, then use the URL http://hcmdb.example.com:8000/psc/ps/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/NUI_FRAMEWORK.PT_LANDINGPAGE.GBL.

Hi Jim,

I have another tip to avoid having to configure the host file on the client computer : create a dynamic domain (example.http80.info - see http://www.dnsdynamic.org/).

You can setup a script on your server to automatically update your IP (dnsdynamic provides it), personnally I just login and update it manually when needed. I also had to configure my router to open the ports so the VM is accessible from everywhere.

Hi Jim
I see the very interesting fact for HCM 9.2.008 image. The database lists 11.2.0.3 which is not supported as per certification databse. Miniimum supported is 11.2.0.4 for 8.54. Either the manifest information is wrong or they have the image on unsupported version.

@Ketan, I noticed that too. I also looked on eDelivery for 11.2.0.4.0 and only see 11.2.0.1.0 for Linux. I'm not really sure what that means.

Is there a way to hide or disable a process in the "Process Scheduler Request" page, either with or without code?

@Raul, that sounds like a great question for the PeopleSoft General Discussion OTN forum.

Hi Jim,

I have installed PeopleTools 8.54. I am facing a weird issue. Every time I try to add new class to any AppPackage (existing or new), AppDesigner crashes to desktop. Even the trace is not helpful. Think there is issue with AppPackage meta tables, but not sure what. Not sure if this is the right post to raise this.

Thanks!

@Pratik, did you use configuration manager to clear your desktop cache? If that doesn't work, then you may need to file a support ticket to resolve this issue.

@Siva, if you don't have your VM up and running, then you can turn off SES at the initialization phase. If your VM is already running and configured, then you can turn off SES by running chkconfig ses off.

Jim, thanks muchly for all the tips.

For the 8.54 VM, did you need to do anything besides decrease the memory in VirtualBox to 2Gig?

Jim Marion said...

@Jeff, just turn off SES or make sure I didn't enable it at the start.

Hi Jim, Thanks for sharing. All you post are soo good. Could you please also post how to configure SSL node for PUSH notification that was introduced in: Oracle’s PeopleSoft 9.0 Campus Community Changes and Updates for CS Bundle #31 Thanks.

@Shan, I am not familiar with that Campus Solutions feature. I suggest you post your question on the OTN PeopleSoft Forum.

Jim....

My client is planning to move forward on a tools upgrade...Yea!...Currently on 8.49 and version 9.0 of FSCM. Initially I was happy thinking the upgrade would be to 8.55, but NO!!!, I am being told the latest 'Tested' release for 9.0 is 8.54. I'm bummed, seriously. I can hardly find the strength to get out of bed in the morning...Why even bother?! By the time our upgrade is live the release will be over two years old! All I can think of is all the new features in the latest release. Event Mapping, Log Analyzer..It hurts..Any thoughts on this? Other on-line references I have come across make no mention about 8.55 not available for version 9.0 customers, so I'm confused. Should I try to argue for an 8.55 upgrade? or should I just move on? Can you tell me: Is anyone planning on testing these two versions at Oracle anytime soon? Any info ANYONE might have on the topic I can definitely pay you....In hamburgers...on Tuesday...

The SR...warning 9.0 customers about 8.55...SR #3-12684951291

TIA.

@Andy, first, step away from the ledge. Life is truly worth living :).

I wish I could give you more information, but as you may have noticed from my blogger profile, I left Oracle a couple of weeks ago. So hopefully one of my Oracle followers will give you more information. I can see your client's point and would probably agree that they should stay with tested releases. But with that said, I'm sure you know that apps and tools are separated so that tools can usually be upgraded separate from apps. There have been tools changes that required app patches, but given the distance between your client's app version and the current tools version, I would think things would be pretty safe. But without Oracle's stamp and guarantee, all you can do is attempt the upgrade and perform full functional testing.

Hi Jim,

After we upgraded the application to Peopletools 8.54.26, we disabled the fluid home page in the Webprofile. But for some users in IE11/Windows 10, the default login is directing to https://:/psc/ps/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/NUI_FRAMEWORK.PT_LANDINGPAGE.GBL.A message box appears with "You are not authorized" error. Oracle support (from the application side) and Microsoft support(IE/Windows PC side) played the blame game with each other. The same users can login using Mozilla/Chrome from these machines. Fiddler logs say no much difference between working session and non-working session except that for a non-working session a "psback" cookie with no value is shown. Any inputs regarding the direction of investigation?

The above issue was resolved after adding the site URL to the intranet's trusted zone in IE; so definitely not an application issue

@Pradeep, thank you for sharing the resolution.
